Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will chair a meeting about the violent protest against the repossession of public land rent to residents in Tien Lang District, Hai Phong city last month.

In the protest, 49-year-old farmer Le Van Vuon resisted the city’s authorities and together with other family members, shot injured 6 police officers who performed the forced removal.
The meeting is expected to last from February 6 to 10.

Before the meeting takes place, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has requested the Government Inspectorate, the ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, Public Security, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Justice to review the case and prepare solutions to the problem.

The chairman of the Hai Phong City People’s Committee was also requested to prepare detailed reports about the case.

Phuc also asked the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme Procuracy and the Vietnam Farmers’ Association to submit their opinions.

As earlier reported, Vuon and his family members shot and injured 6 police officers who were executing the decision by Tien Lang District’s authorities to repossess 40 hectares of public land rent to Vuon’s family for an airport project on January 5.

The local authorities allocated the land to Vuon’s family in 1993 and under their decision on land allocation, the term of allocation was expired in 2007 when Vuon had to return the land.

But Vuon did not agree to the repossession since under the Law on Land that took effect on October 15, 1993, the duration of land allocation is 20 years, not 14 years as stated in the authorities’ decision on land allocation.

After the violent resistance, Vuon and 3 other members of his family have been arrested and prosecuted on charges of attempted murder, while 2 other members, including Vuon’s wife, were indicted for resisting law enforcement officers on duty, but were let out on bail.
