Taxi drivers from the Mai Linh firm yesterday coordinated in the chase and eventual seizure of a man who had robbed a cab owned by the company from a driver who was busy helping passengers load luggage onto the car in Binh Duong Province.
Phan Tien Anh, the cab’s driver, said that at noon yesterday, he was instructed by the firm’s operator to pick up passengers in Dinh Hiep Commune, Dau Tieng District, and then carry them to an area bordering Cambodia.
When he arrived at the commune, Anh got out of the car to help the passengers bring their luggage from their house to the cab.
At that time a strange man suddenly got into the cab and drove away at a very high speed. Anh immediately called the firm’s operator and some of his mates for help.
The operator called the firm’s taxicabs that were operating in the area and ordered them to join the hunt for the robber.
Finally, a taxi driver, Mai Hai Chien, found the robbed taxi running on a street in Lai Thieu Town. He chased after it and called the local crime prevention and control club for help.
The robber was later seized and was escorted to the local police office, where he identified himself as Nguyen Van Con, 33, a resident of Tay Ninh Province.
Con confessed that he wanted to rob the cab and then sell it to get money to repay his debt.
He also told the police that as he was escaping, he had picked up passengers, until he was spotted by Chien.
The police are continuing their handling of the case.

A similar incident happened to another Mai Linh driver in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City on December 15, when Tran Dai Quoc, 30, attacked 23 year-old driver Le Van Trung with a knife while trying to rob the cab, but Trung resisted so strongly that the robber had to run away.
While Trung was giving Quoc a ride, the latter suddenly brandished the knife and shouted, “I’ll stab you to death.” Trung immediately raised his right arm to protect himself. His arm was cut by the knife.
Despite the pain, Trung tried to use his left arm to operate the steering wheel to stop the cab, which crashed into a field.
The two men wrestled inside the cab and Quoc later escaped through an open window. Local residents and police caught Quoc ten minutes later.
