-- A delegation of the National Assembly led by Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong left Shanghai yesterday for Tokyo to attend the 20th Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum, concluding their five-day working visit to China. In her meeting with Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai municipal People’s Congress, Liu Yungeng, Phong spoke highly of the city’s socio-economic achievements, turning it into one of the major economic hubs in China as well as in the region and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
-- Lao Prime Minister Thongsin Thammavong received Vietnamese Deputy PM Ngyen Xuan Phuc in Vientiane yesterday. The Vietnamese Deputy PM was on a visit to Laos to attend the 34 th session of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-governmental Committee on economic, cultural, education, scientific and technological cooperation.

-- Construction sites on Ho Chi Minh City streets will be cleared up on January 9-18 in preparation for Tet holiday, according to the city’s department of transportation.
-- Police in Mong Cai City, the northern province of Quang Ninh seized Tran Phuoc Hung and Nguyen Van Thang, both 21, for throwing grenades into a group of police in Hai Hoa ward, causing one dead and five injured.
-- A requiem for the missing sailors of the sunken cargo vessel Vinalines Queen will be held today in the northern port city of Hai Phong. The ship with 23 crew members on board went missing on December 25 while transporting 54,400 tonnes of nickel ore from Morowali Port in Indonesia to Ningde Port in China . It was later confirmed to have sunk.
-- A Liberian ship, the Main Trader, rescued all 15 fishermen aboard a Vietnamese sunken vessel yesterday. An unidentified ship collided with the Vietnamese vessel on January 2 while it was fishing at sea, according to Nguyen Van Hieu, captain of the unlucky ship who survived the incident.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City market management department has confiscated more than 1000 wine bottles imported illegally within a week from December 28 2011 to January 4 2012. Previously the department also found 10,000 bottles produced without a license in the city’s Hoc Mon district.
-- The Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment and Vietnam’s Golf Long Thanh Trade and Investment JSC signed an agreement in Vientiane last Saturday to upgrade the Vientiane golf course and real estate complex to a special economic zone. Both sides agreed to amend and supplement the complex project in line with Laos’ Special Economic Zone development policy.
-- The Dong Nai province People's Committee has approved in principle the establishment of a hi-tech park, expected to cost 75 million USD, in Long Thanh district. The project's investor, Amata Vietnam Company, said the park will strive to attract Japanese and European investors who are interested in hi-tech industries.

-- Hoang Thi Thuy, a sophomore at the Hanoi University of Architecture, won in the finale of the Vietnam’s next top model competition held yesterday in Ho Chi Minh’s Phan Dinh Phung stadium. Tyler Banks, the show creator, was also present in the event and shared the victory with the Vietnamese models.
-- The first Asian-Pacific Poetry Festival will be held in the northern province of Quang Ninh on February 2-3. Vice President of the association, poet Nguyen Quang Thieu said this is the first time that Vietnam will host the Asian-Pacific poetry festival, titled “Poetry for a Peaceful, Co-operative and Developed Asia-Pacific”.
