HCMC - Taiwan’s Wintek Corporation will begin manufacturing touch screens for Apple iPhone and iPad devices in Vietnam in the middle of next year.
The company signed a contract on Sunday with the Saigon Bac Giang Industrial Park Joint Stock Company, a member of Kinh Bac Urban Development Corporation (KBC), to lease 60 hectares of land there to set up shop.
The factory will be located in Quang Chau Industrial Park in the northern province of Bac Giang, which has been developed by Saigon Bac Giang Industrial Park Joint Stock Company.
Dang Thanh Tam, chairman and CEO of KBC, told the Daily on the phone on Monday that the investor would use more than 150,000 square meters of workshop at the park to locate its factory with investment capital of US$150 million in the first phase.
Wintek expects the facility to be up and running in mid-2011, Tam said, adding the project will create jobs for thousands of workers.
In the first phase of the project, the forthcoming plant would export some US$400 million worth of products per year, he said.
The company is well-known for its LCD touch screens worldwide and is one of the only two companies in the world to make touch screens for the iPad. Tam said the investor would invest more than US$300 million in Vietnam in the second phase to expand manufacturing.
Quang Chau Industrial Park covers 600 hectares, with 400 hectares reserved for industrial manufacturing and the rest for services and residential purposes. Opened in 2006 the park has attracted Japanese and Taiwan investors, especially in the high-tech field.
