PM hopes to strengthen trade ties with Canada

HA NOI — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said he hoped to increase two-way trade turnover between Viet Nam and Canada to more than US$2 billion in the coming time.

He made the statement during the farewell ceremony for the outgoing Canadian ambassador to Viet Nam Deanna Horton.

Speaking with the ambassador at a meeting in the capital city yesterday, Dung said Viet Nam-Canada co-operation in trade, investment, education and training had achieved positive results.

Canada would be one of the leading investors in Viet Nam, he said.

Dung spoke highly of the contributions the ambassador had made in promoting mutual understanding and strengthing relations between the countries, especially in humanitarian support, culture, education and international co-operation.

The Prime Minister requested Canada to continue working with Vietnamese ministries to increase bilateral negotiations in order to sign the Viet Nam-Canada Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement soon.

Ambassador Deanna Horton said Canada would continue to speed up co-operation with Viet Nam, particularly in education and training.

Regarding investment, she said several Canadian enterprises were interested in expanding their investments in Viet Nam. — VNS
