HA NOI — Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh yesterday said he hoped relations between Viet Nam and Poland would continue to develop and become more efficient.
Speaking to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at a meeting in Ha Noi during the leader's official visit to Viet Nam, Manh expressed his thanks for Poland's precious support for Viet Nam during the country's construction and development. The Party leader said he highly valued the achievements Poland has made in development and international integration.
He said he hoped the Polish Government would continue to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese people living, working and studying in Poland.
Tusk affirmed that Poland would work to foster co-operative relations with Viet Nam and between Viet Nam and the European Union in trade, commerce, culture, science and technology.
Viet Nam pays high regards to its friendship and co-operation with Poland, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in the capital city yesterday.
Dung said Viet Nam would do all it could to raise Vietnamese-Polish bilateral co-operation to a higher level.
"The visit by Prime Minister Donald Tusk is an occasion for the two sides to discuss measures to deepen their bilateral co-operation in both scope and scale," said Dung.
In 2009, trade turnover between the two countries stood at US $550 million against the target of $500 million. It is forecast the 2010 figure is likely to reach $600 million.
At present Viet Nam is one of Poland's largest trade partners. Many Vietnamese products are sold there.
Poland promised to provide Viet Nam $260 million in preferential loans to carry out shipbuilding and mineral extraction projects.
Dung wished in the near future the two countries would grant favourable conditions for their traditional and key products to enter their respective markets.
He pledged to create necessary conditions for Polish businessmen to come to Viet Nam to seek opportunities to invest in the country.
"Viet Nam always supports Poland in expanding its relations with other ASEAN countries, and wants Poland to help the country expand relations with other EU members," said Dung.
Referring to the field of education and training, Prime Minister Dung asked Poland to grant more scholarships to Vietnamese to study in Poland.
Dung took the occasion to thank the Polish government for providing support to about 30,000 Vietnamese people who are now studying and working in Poland. He said he hoped the Polish authorities would continue to ensure the conditions for the Vietnamese nationals living there were sufficient.
"This is a bridge to help promote the co-operation and mutual understanding between the two countries," said Dung.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk told his host that the two countries had many similarities in terms of history, particularly the age-old traditional friendship and co-operation of the two peoples.
"These relations have been fostered by top leaders of Viet Nam and Poland. Though the two countries are quite far away geographically, it has not hampered the comprehensive co-operation between us," said Donald.
He reiterated that Poland considered Viet Nam as an important partner in Asia.
After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of several agreements, including one on national defence co-operation and a protocol on co-operation between the two Foreign Ministries.
