ASEAN remembers 45th year

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and ambassadors from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Ha Noi yesterday to celebrate the grouping's 45th anniversary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a ceremony this morning to raise the flag of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Viet Nam national flag in Ha Noi to celebrate 45 years since the group's foundation on August 8, and 17 years since the country joined the group.

Today, all nations from the group together raised the ASEAN flag to express their determination to build an East Asian Community by 2015, and a proposed trade bloc for East Asian countries that may arise from either ASEAN Plus Three or the East Asia Summit. It also aimed to develop ASEAN's role and image of solidarity, taking initiative and solving issues on the new development path, especially challenges to peace, stability, security and development in the region.

ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organisation of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, including Viet Nam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. —VNA/VNS
