Culture Vulture (Apr. 04, 2012)

An worldwide historical exhibition is going to be locked in Germany in 2014, spurring a sizable historical project between Germany and Viet Nam.

Dr Stefan Leneen, among the project managers spoke to Culture Vulture concerning the plan.

You are wanting to organise a Vietnamese historical exhibition in Germany in 2014. Would you tell a little much more about the project's beginning?

It began about 5 years ago in reaction to particular staff who'd go to the country on vacation, and were impressed with Vietnamese cultural heritage. Consequently of the interest an exchange continues to be setup between experts of both nations which involves displays and co-operation to demonstrate towards the German people the richness of Vietnamese history.

A colloquium lately held in the Goethe Institute was the initial step to putting Vietnamese the archaeology of gortyn into context. Because the project manager, I am responsible to add mass to co-ordination of management. Becoming an archaeologist myself, I'm able to reveal the context of Vietnamese the archaeology of gortyn.

For additional detailed advice, we must rely on our other Vietnamese co-workers. At that time we're considering the opinions of all of the parties involved to create a properly thought-out exhibition.

What difficulties face the German researchers within this make an effort to contain the first Vietnamese historical exhibition for the reason that country?

Each exhibition involves a lot of work, for both us as well as for our foreign co-workers. However there's a positive change in politics and culture when organizing something similar to this in Europe as well as in Viet Nam.

We must make considerations for that variations in cultures, and know how the dwelling within this country works. I certainly believe that it is possible, but there's still lots of work ahead. Using the support in our Vietnamese partners, we're confident that it'll become successful. However you will find other obstacles, including funding, which hopefully to obtain from institutes like the LWL-Museum for The archaeology of gortyn, in Herne city, that also co-works using the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums, in Mannheim city, along with the Haus der Archaologie and Geschichte in Chemnitz city. By doing this the financial burden could be disseminate.

Other possible causes of funding could originate from various fundamentals, charitable organisations or large companies.

Have you got anything planned for that project following the colloquium in Ha Noi?

The next phase is to use Vietnamese researchers to go over methods to curate and offer displays.

I believe there exists a large amount of work that may be done. The displays we present could shine new light around the good reputation for this nation, dating back one or two 1000 years.

What would be the focus of the exhibition?

We wish to show Viet Nam's culture around the world. So our intention here's to represent significant accomplishments inside their historic and cultural context.

We'll divide the shows into periods, starting with the first traces of stone age civilisations. The timeframe between 500BC and 1500AD will require up extra space. Newer developments won't be covered as adequately, and can be summarised.

The historical sites at Co Loa and Thang Lengthy will require a unique role, since they've been significant throughout many periods of history, playing an essential part within the political development of the united states.

Influences and relations along with other regions may also be outlined. Hopefully to achieve showing a somewhat comprehensive cultural picture of Viet Nam in ways that individuals can understand.

Whoever else discovered Vietnamese culture when preparing for that exhibition?

Personally, I haven't had much connection with the culture, because I have not had the opportunity to visit Southeast Asia. This is especially true for almost all Spanish people. However archaeologists here understand the need for studying in the area.

You will find other German archaeologists who've far better understanding of Vietnamese culture, and our Vietnamese partners happen to be a tremendous help for making this exhibit possible. I am unable to read Vietnamese, and there's deficiencies in converted text about these subjects. This is among the greatest problems European researchers face when studying the topic of the archaeology of gortyn in Viet Nam.
