Development harms Hue's water quality

THUA THIEN-HUE — The water environment in Hue was steadily worsening under the impacts of urbanisation and globalisation-induced changes, participants said at a three-day workshop that ended in the central city yesterday.

Jointly held by the Hue University of Sciences and Tokyo University's Centre of Sustainable Urban Restoration, the workshop brought together hundreds of local and Japanese experts to discuss measures to improve and manage the water environment in the city.

Experts stressed the importance of improved management in the city's efforts to ensure sustainable development and tackle climate change challenges.

Participants brought to the workshop findings of research conducted for more than one year on the city's water environment.

The workshop listened to 12 presentations covering four main areas: flood and inundation in Hue; quality of water environment and involved health risks; historical architecture amidst the water landscape; and impacts of climate change on Hue's urban development.

The increased annual flooding experienced by the city was cited as clear evidence of deterioration of the water environment in the city.

This posed a serious health threat to the community, workshop participants said.

A similar event was held in Tokyo earlier this year with the participation of both Vietnamese and Japanese researchers. — VNS
