Aid on way to Mindulle storm victims

The Vietnam Red Cross has prepared money and goods worth over 4.3 billion VND to aid storm victims in the central coastal region after tropical storm Mindulle hit the region on August 24, killing seven.

According to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecast Centre, storm No 3 has weakened into a tropical low and will continue bringing rainfall from Thanh Hoa to Nghe An provinces and expand to the southern region of the Northern Delta. The provinces should stay alert, especially taking precautions against flash floods and landslides in the mountainous districts.

The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has also resumed flights and added four more flights on August 25 between Nghe An’s Vinh City and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The airline had to cancel 14 flights on August 23 and 24 due to the storm which seriously affected Nghe An, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang and Quang Ngai. One victim died and two went missing in Hanoi Tinh province. Quang Tri province estimates damages at 4.5 billion VND and in Da Nang city, a fishing boat has been declared missing, along with 10 fishermen.

In the hardest-hit province of Nghe An, the storm killed 6 people and injured 43 others, unroofed 31,500 houses and collapsed 295 others, with about 8,400 ha of crop likely to be lost as well. The total loss is estimated at 590 billion VND.

To deal with the disaster, Thanh Hoa province has evacuated about 18,000 people in the coastal districts including Tinh Gia, Quang Xuong, Hau Loc, Hoang Hoa and Nga Son to the mainland./.
