2012 Super League will have to rename itself into a more Vietnam-related name
The General Department of Sports and Physical Training has recently requested that Vietnam’s top-tier Super League be changed into a more Vietnamese-related name.
Specifically, the department has filed documents with Vietnam Professional Football (VPF), the league organizer, and Vietnam Football Federation, to change from “2012 Super League” to a name that will show it is the Vietnamese national football league.
Moreover, the shortened name of the league should also be changed in a way so that it may contain letters indicating Vietnamese provenance, rather than an entire English name like the current “Super League,” the department stated.
In response, Pham Ngoc Vien, VFF deputy chairman and VPF CEO, said although he has yet to receive the fiat, he has already considered some alternative names for the league.
“The top-tier league can be renamed “Super V-League,” and the first division league will be turned into “V-League 1”,” said Vien.
“However, we may keep all of the ad banners and billboards containing the old names printed last year since we cannot afford the huge expense of replacing them.”
The General Department of Sports and Physical Training also urged VFF chairman to issue the regulations for the 2012 Vietnamese professional football league.
VFF should also rectify referee tasks, as well as ensure the matches’ security, the department said.
