Malaysia keeps holding the presidency of the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) for the fourth consecutive term after Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin, president of the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC), won the body’s board of executive election Saturday (local time) in Surakarta, Indonesia.
Zainal collected seven out of 10 votes while his Thai challenger Maj. Gen. Osoth Bhavilai garnered only three.
Rosmadee Md. Daud of Brunei retained his post as assistant secretary general while Kassim Abdul Rahman of Malaysia remained as treasurer.
The term will see four new vice presidents in the board – Carlos P. Webber Jr. of the Philippines, Sukanti Bintoro (Indonesia), Thein Win (Myanmar) and Dr Kesone Sisongkam of Laos.
All ASEAN countries except Timor Leste cast their votes in the balloting to elect the office bearers for the 2011-2015 term.
APSF is made up of such Southeast Asian nations as Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Timor Leste is also part of the bloc but has yet to be accorded voting rights.
Established in 2001 and currently headquartered in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur, APSF is the governing body of the paralympic movement in the region.
It is committed to enabling athletes with a disability in Southeast Asia to achieve sporting excellence.
