Danh takes second stage of Mekong Delta cycling tour

HA NOI — Cyclist Lam Cong Danh of An Giang Plant Protection won the second round of the 19th Mekong Delta Cycling Tour-An Giang Plant Protection Cup yesterday.

The 36km race around Long Xuyen City of An Giang Province saw the most decisive competition for racers since the beginning of the tournament. An Giang Plant Protection's cyclists held off attacks by dividing into small groups to reduce the strength of their rivals.

Danh received strong support from his teammates who pushed up the speed of the race in the last laps. He was out on his own in the last metres to finish the stage in 49min 55sec with a top speed of 43.272km/h.

He was followed by his teammate Trinh Phat Dat and Nguyen Truong Tai of Domesco Dong Thap.

Nguyen Nam Cuc of Sai Gon Plant Protection 2 kept the yellow jersey after two stages with a total time of 4:59.38, followed him by Dang Trung Hieu of Can Tho and Danh.

Sai Gon Plant Protection 2, which leads team ranking, led the race with a combined time of 15:01.52, followed by the Military Zone 7 and ADC-Vinh Long Television.

Today, the cyclists will continue their 124km race from Long Xuyen City to Rach Gia. The annual competition, which began in 1992, goes through 11 provinces. — VNS
