HCMC – Nguyen Hue Boulevard in downtown HCMC has been sealed off as work has begun on a project to build the annual flower street for the traditional Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet.
Some 120,000 flower pots and other furnishing items will soon be transported to the Nguyen Hue Flower Street site in District 1 from farms in Dalat City, the Mekong Delta and HCMC.
The flower street will feature the beauty of villages and islands, said Chiem Thanh Long, deputy head of the flower street’s organizing committee.
The highlight this year will be a huge dragon which is 26 meters long and five meters wide. The dragon, made of bamboo and water hyacinth, will be set up at the T-junction area between Nguyen Hue and Ton Duc Thang roads.
“All preparations have been completed and we are setting up the first miniatures for the flower street,” said Long.
Lasting from the 27th of lunar December to the fourth of lunar January, the flower street is one of the main programs for the Tet festival 2012 organized by Saigontourist.
Other Tet events include a banh tet (glutinous rice cake) cooking festival, fireworks displays, street lighting, and music performances.
Together with Saigontourist, 14 other firms such as PepsiCo Vietnam, Van Thinh Phat Co., Windsor Plaza Hotel and Samsung Vina sponsor this festival.
