Committee to extensively review Vinashin operations

HCMC - Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said on Tuesday the steering committee for restructuring of shipbuilding giant Vinashin would conduct a comprehensive review of operations of Vinashin and its affiliates.

The steering committee will have to make accurate assessments of Vinashin and its subsidiaries, joint ventures and investment projects as well as its debts to find out the best way for its restructuring, said Hung, who is head of the steering committee.

He stressed the need to consolidate the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) to help it stabilize and develop into a key player in the country’s shipbuilding industry as long envisioned, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

In an order signed on Monday, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said any restructuring plan for Vinashin should focus on three core operations, namely ship building and repair, supporting services for the shipbuilding industry and human resource development for the industry.

He asked the Ministry of Transport to map out a plan for restructuring the group and pass it to him in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Government leader tasked the Ministry of Finance with dealing with the Vinashin debt and devising schemes to ensure capital resources for its production.

He told the group to focus its resources on implementing its production plan and fulfilling its existing shipbuilding contracts, urgently draw up a plan for repaying loans for banks and review the group’s investment projects and sell or equitize non-core businesses.
