HCMC – Coffee prices in the country have been falling over the past two weeks and are expected to drop further in the coming time as Brazil from Wednesday will offload its coffee volume stockpiled in 2009.
The world’s leading coffee producer from this month will sell 1.4 million bags of Arabica coffee, or around 50,000 60-kilo bags weekly, according to specialist Nguyen Quang Binh.
This offload will affect not only Arabica but also Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam given connections between the two markets. Therefore, the local coffee market will face price volatility in the future, Binh said.
In the Central Highlands, the product was around VND36,700 to VND37,000 per kilo on Tuesday, falling by VND700 per kilo against the previous day and VND1,400 compared to those before the Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet.
Concerning the problem, Nguyen Viet Vinh, general secretary of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), said it is normal for coffee prices to come down after reaching the peak of some VND50,000 a kilo in 2011.
Over the past time, developments of coffee prices in Vietnam are caused by speculation of foreign traders, not the supply-demand relation, Vinh added.
According to Vicofa, Vietnam exports around 100,000 tons of coffee monthly with an aim to help regulate coffee prices on the world market. However, coffee prices have dropped, not on the rise as earlier expected.
Local farmers have begun to build their own warehouses to stock coffee given price uncertainties this year.
